Fifth grade: preparing for September

Fifth grade summer work

June 2020

Dear rising fifth grader,

Welcome to Gordon’s Middle School! Fourth grade teachers prepared this math packet for you to complete before school starts in September. Your fifth grade teacher next year will expect you to have this work completed by the first day of school, so please bring your completed work with you that day. We recommend that you spend 15-20 minutes three times a week working on the math packet. This way, you will keep these concepts and skills fresh in your mind, which should make the start of the year easier.

If you have trouble remembering how to do a particular kind of problem, just do the best you can and show your work. Your teacher will understand if you forget things or make mistakes, but do try each problem! You can also check the Math in Focus website to review skills or concepts.

We would also like you to continue reading this summer.

Please choose books that you have not read before and make sure your two choices are not from the same genres (like two graphic novels for instance). Of course, you can read more than two books over the summer! You can use the Middle School Reading booklet as a guide to make your choices or not. Whatever titles you choose, please have a parent help so that you are sure it is a ‘just right’ book ( not too easy, not too hard) for you. Remember to record your choices in the log at the back of the booklet. You should read for at least thirty minutes three times a week.

Summer reading books do not need to be purchased, feel free to take advantage of your local library! There are also books that are available as digital audio books and as ebooks. Instructions on how to access those are in the booklet.

Have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Gabe Burnstein
