Parent dialogues: antiracist practice and pedagogy
Gordon’s series of parent dialogues continues this year, more interactive and participatory than ever.
As Gordon strives to be a more antiracist community, we will continue to provide opportunities for us all, adults and students alike, to deepen our understanding of race and justice and to evolve the language we use to best represent our core values and mission.
For decades, Gordon has used a multicultural curriculum and supported a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and families. This work has always included an intention to introduce students to multiple perspectives throughout our curriculum, and to help students understand, in developmentally appropriate ways, how race, class, gender and privilege impact their lives. Developing empathy and taking action are keys to a more just world, and these
lessons can begin as early as nursery school and provide a foundation for Gordon students to live out our mission at school and beyond.
For this year, our parent dialogues center around the topic of what it means to build an antiracist community: as a school, as care-givers, as young people. This year, Gordon will provide parents with information, ideas, inspiration and space to question, learn, connect, and act around topics that matter to all of us. Delving deeper into antiracist practice and pedagogy is not only timely but also a natural evolution of Gordon’s commitment to creating a community where everyone can belong and contribute. This year’s Antiracist Practice and Pedagogy series will continue the conversations parents have been having with each other during the Conversations on Race series that has happened over the past several years.
We recognize that antiracism is a process and an aspiration, not a journey with a fixed endpoint. We are all working towards this as parents, teachers, students and a community. It is ongoing work that we are grappling with together, and none of us have arrived fully.

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You. A Remix of the National Book Award-Winning Stamped from the Beginning, Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi
Come ready to discuss this book, required summer reading for Gordon's faculty, staff, and seventh and eighth grades, and learn about the foundation of antiracist practice. We will have a brief presentation, followed by small break out groups facilitated by Gordon faculty and administration and parents from Gordon's Parents of Students of Color group and the Antiracism Working Group for White Parents.

Author of Promoting Racial Literacy in Schools: Differences that Make a Difference, Dr. Stevenson has conducted extensive research in racial stress and racial literacy, specifically focusing on how schools can better support all students. Gordon's Parents of Students of Color and the Antiracism Working Group for White Parents collaborate to lead a conversation on a topic that's at the center of this series: how do we raise antiracist children? What is Gordon's culture of antiracist practice? Join in a conversation about the places and traditions where Gordon's antiracist culture is expressed—the Civil Rights Trip, Common Ground, and more—and help imagine ways to bring this work into fuller expression all year round.
