Afiya holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Mount Holyoke College. After two amazing years as a Rhode Island Children’s Crusade AmeriCorps member in which she worked directly with students in third through fifth grade and their families, she decided to pursue a career in the field of education. She received her Masters of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education from Roger Williams University in 2009.

When she was in Gordon’s Lower School, from 2010 to 2017, she kept her higher-level math skills sharp, coaching beginning teachers on the national math Praxis test, teaching math instruction to the graduate students in the Teacher Residency Program, and tutoring Gordon Middle School students.

Afiya is enjoying the wonderful young learners who are beginning to see the impact they have on the world and that the world has on them. She strives to connect with each child and their family on a personal level. She views these connections as vital components in building and maintaining a caring and compassionate classroom community.

When she is not at Gordon, Afiya enjoys swimming, biking, and sewing. She enjoys the process of transforming a piece of fabric into a garment of clothing. Afiya has always called the quiet relaxing town of Bristol home.
