Preparing for company

Visiting Artist Kirsten Hassenfeld
Fifteen thousand drinking straws came in the mail today.

They are paper straws, the kind that can be glued together.

They are now stacked in the corner, along with two gallons of glue, six feet of corrugated cardboard, fifteen chenilles and six pounds of paraffin wax...
...waiting for the arrival next week of Kirsten Hassenfeld, Gordon's fourteenth Britt Nelson Visiting Artist.

Best known in Rhode Island for last year’s solo exhibition at Brown University’s Bell Gallery, Kirsten is trained in printmaking, papermaking and bookmaking. For her sculptures, she cuts, folds, glues, rolls and coils tissue paper, vellum, and corrugated paper into small elements—beads, swags, etc.—that are then combined into representations of ornamentation and the decorative arts.

She will be on campus beginning January 18th, meeting with all grade levels and working daily with third grade, fifth grade and the seventh and eighth grade visual art elective. She will give a public artist talk on Wednesday, January 26th. This is the fourteenth year for the Britt Nelson Visiting Artist program.
