Day four: the 2012 Civil Rights Trip

An hour-by-hour play-by-play

Throughout the trip south, eighth graders fill journals with observations and reflections. These are the raw material for scrapbooks and spoken presentations that they work on for the rest of the month.

Below is a different kind of writing: an eighth grader's hour-by-hour account of the first day. If the students' journals were blogs, then these would be one student's 'tweets':

Day #4
Friday February 10

9:02am
Back on the bus after a fun night in Atlanta! It’s the last day- the trip went by so fast!

9:38am
Arriving at Morehouse College, we meet with Ms. Whatley and two student speakers. One of the individuals, Andre Washington gave us an in-depth tour of the Morehouse campus, while sharing his views and opinions on past and present civil rights issues.

11:34am
We are on the bus and reflecting on our inspiring Morehouse experience.

12:05pm
At the King Reflecting Pool at the King Center, we discuss all that we have learned, and how to apply that knowledge to make a difference in our communities and everyday lives. An amazing trip is coming to an end, but I can’t wait to return and share my ideas with friends and family.

12:54pm
On the bus, we retreat from the cold and enjoy a delicious lunch from Lotta Fruitta.

1:34pm
After browsing in the gift shop for tokens to remember our time in the South, we head to the airport. An astounding adventure is coming to a close, but I will never forgot the commitment I made to right the injustices of my world everyday.
