Alum brings Gordon skills and grace to high school championship

With a last-second three-pointer, Ava Giardino ’20 sent last night’s RI Division II championship into its second overtime (above).

The shot immediately drew comparisons to the last five seconds of a game against Lincoln in 2020.

That day, Giardino got the deciding three points the hard way: a free throw, a steal and a buzzer beater, in the space of two seconds.

Ava’s teammates at the AMP last night looked familiar, too: the Moses Brown squad included former Gordon teammates Elise Kurtis ’21, Stella Jellinek ’22 and Tess Holch ’22.

Tolman Shea eventually won the championship, but Giardino’s shot is the one we’re still talking about.

Gordon’s four-year, everyone-plays Middle School athletics program turns out young people who know how to lead a team, how to make a play, and how to excel under pressure.

Yesterday afternoon, this year’s crop of Gordon graduates celebrated their last game in the Nelson Field House, as the eighth grade took on the faculty and staff in a highspirited game. photos here
