When is a sunflower more than a sunflower?

Lessons from a fallen flower

When is a sunflower more than a sunflower?

When it looks round, and a little wilted, and half-bald, and you think about how different it is from the sunflowers you see it picture books and cartoons.

When you notice there are spiders on it, and bugs, and you start to realize a living thing can be a home for other living things.

When you rub it and seeds pop out - sunflower seeds! - and you discover what’s inside the seed shell.

When it occurs to you that this flower might make a nice classroom decoration as it dries, but it also might make for a tasty meal for the worms that live in your compost bin.

Fall is a season full of growth, death and rebirth, and the scientists of Young Kindergaten are here for it all, exploring, making observations, asking questions, making hypotheses and drawing conclusions.
