Welcoming Karina Yan Glaser
For the sixteenth year of the Karla Harry Visiting Author program
Karina Yan Glaser will be working with Gordon students Thursday, December 8th, and Friday, December 9th, as the sixteenth annual Karla Harry Visiting Author. Her visit will include work with Gordon students in second through eighth grade, and a book signing from 3:45 to 4:45pm on Thursday the 8th.
Glaser is the New York Times bestselling author of A Duet for Home and the Vanderbeekers series of novels. The Vanderbeekers stories chronicle the adventures of a biracial family within a close-knit, diverse community in Upper Manhattan. She’s also a contributing editor at Book Riot, the largest independent book media company in North America where she writes the weekly The Kids Are All Right newsletter. Learn more about her work at www.karinaglaser.com.
She has had a varied career teaching and implementing literacy programs in family homeless shelters and recruiting healthcare professionals to volunteer in under resourced areas around the world. Now as a mother, one of her proudest achievements is raising two kids who can’t go anywhere without a book. She lives in Harlem with her husband, two teenagers, one dog, and three cats.
The Karla Harry Visiting Author program is held in memory of a beloved Gordon librarian, administrator and parent. The program provides Gordon students the unique experience of delving into the writer’s craft by working with nationally recognized authors and illustrators. It is supported by the Karla Harry Visiting Author Fund, which was established in 2006.
The residency happens in conjunction with the annual GCA Book Fair, which is December 6th to December 8th. This year’s Book Fair features a number of author events including a public presentation by publishers Cheryl and Wade Hudson. Learn more at bookfair.gordonschool.org.
