Discovering the pumpkin life cycle with Gordon’s youngest
Early Childhood has discovered that it is fun to plant pumpkins.
They’ve learned that it is also fun to harvest them.
And now, they are discovering the joy of decomposing pumpkins.
Nursery harvested this pumpkin from Gordon’s community garden in September and it was part of classroom life until earlier this week.
The sides had grown soft, and it was time to think about the next phase in this pumpkin’s life cycle.
Students had already met the worms in the worm bin.
It was a little sad, but it also a little thrilling.
They may not have understood the all the science of the journey from vegetable to worm casting to soil to vegetable again.
But they knew they were sending their pumpkin off on an adventure.
And they understood they’d be seeing it again next fall.
Meanwhile, down the hall, Young Kindergarten got a worm composting bin for their classroom today. Here they are, meeting their new roommates and getting to know their likes and dislikes (spoiler: worms like the dark).
Plus! This just in! The pumpkin dump will return this year. Families are drop off pumpkins to have them consumed by Mr. Gillen's worms on his worm farm.
A pickup truck will be in front of the school at drop off, ready to receive your ex-jack-o-lanterns:
