The Gordon School

Robotics season heats up

photos: scenes from Tuesday's robotics practice. These sixth graders are invested 100%, even when their programming is downloaded and their robot is out of their hands.

Gordon's after school competitive robotics teams are an extension of a programming and engineering curriculum that begins in the youngest classrooms.

In LEGO robotics team competition, teammates collaborate to research and develop solutions to real-world challenges.

They also create ornate programs that guide freestanding LEGO robots through a tricky and unforgiving obstacle course.

Gordon fielded its first robotics team in 2002, and since then, the school has competed at the national level, with alumni going on to beginning their own teams in their high schools and colleges.

Fans have three chances to see middle school LEGO robotics in action over the next ten days:

Saturday, December 8th
Qualifying tournament hosted at Gordon (Gordon's team will not be competing)
spectator portion begins at noon

Monday, December 10th
Intramural scrimmage between Gordon's sixth grade team and the seventh and eighth grade team
3:30 in Gordon's theater

Saturday, December 15th
Qualifying tournament hosted at Rocky Hill School, East Greenwich
Gordon's seventh and eighth grade team will compete
spectator portion begins at noon
