Robot battles ten years in the making

Last night, Gordon’s sixth graders went head-to-head in an evening of competitive robotics.
 

Parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, nieces, uncles, and friends gathered to watch them coax their creations into performing an array of tasks on the game board.
 

It was the culmination of ten weeks of intense work in science class, experimenting, programming, and building with the FIRST LEGO league kits.
 

That mini-semester, in turn, built on robotics and programming lessons that began in Gordon’s Nursery class.
 

Over the next two years, some of them will choose to represent Gordon in the statewide LEGO robotics league.
 

Some of them may never program a robot again.
 

But all of them will have had hands-on experience in a number of advanced programming protocols, and they will have picked up the teamwork, planning, sequencing, and planning skills that competitive robotics demands.
