Return of the clothing swap

Part of sixth grade investigation of sustainability and closed-loop systems

The sixth grade clothing swap returns this afternoon! This is the third year for this student-led event.

For students, this is an action item that comes out of conversations about fast fashion, retail systems, and the power dynamics involved in global production, trade and consumption.

Sixth grade science, math and humanities all focus on topics in sustainability, all year. By keeping useful clothing out of the landfill and in the Gordon community, the clothing swap represents an efficient, closed-loop system that reduces waste and maximizes the value of mass-produced items.

Ask a sixth grader about this at the swap this afternoon. They’ve promoted the swap and collected and sorted the donations, and they will be staffing the tables when the swap opens. They are also displaying the maps they have created as they prepare for their Model UN later this spring.

The swap is Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, 3:30 to 5pm, in the theater. For this, the third year of the swap, sixth grade is abandoning any system of tickets and limits, and allowing everyone to take what they can use, free of charge.
