Celebrating the one hundredth day of school

Today is the one hundredth day of the school year.

Kindergarten and first grade have been counting the days since the year began.

Every day, they marked the calendar and made their tally.

Today was the day of one hundred smiles and one hundred LEGOs, of one hundred goldfish and one hundred seconds, of twelve-and-a-half groups of eight.

It's a lesson in math.

It's also a lesson in imagination.

And the power of numbers to describe the world.

At age six, one hundred is almost too big a number to consider.

And yet, by February, it is within their reach.
