New perspectives, shared values

Connecting caregivers as we raise Generation Alpha together

Gordon curates a large variety of meetings and contexts for parents to connect with one another throughout the year. Some are focused on particular grades, like Ages and Stages (new series begins in January). Some are affinity spaces like the Neurodivergence Family Network (next meeting Thursday the 11th).

Then there are meetings like this morning’s, which are open to all with an agenda that every parent can see themselves reflected in.

Head of School Meredith deChabert led a conversation using Parents Under Pressure, a recent advisory from the U.S. Surgeon General, as a spring board.

Thirty parents joined the back-and-forth, representing every grade in the school, with voices who have been at Gordon for fifteen years and others who arrived three weeks ago.

The conversation ranged freely, but one theme was parents’ search for models and peers to connect with as they raise Generation Alpha. “We’re struggling to find truth and authenticity online,” said one parent afterwards, “and we are not looking to replicate what our parents did. So where are the role models? We’re open to new perspectives that are rooted in shared values, and the one place we’re consistently getting that is here at Gordon.”

Ready for some new perspectives rooted in shared values? Dr. deChabert is repeating this morning’s talk for parents and caregivers next Friday at 8:15am. The Parents Under Pressure advisory can be downloaded at www.gordonschool.org/parents, though advance reading is not necessary.
