Never too young to use their voices

Helping students handle difference, debate and disagreement

Gordon knows that, with guidance from caring adults, students are never too young to learn how to take a stance and how to navigate perspectives of others that may differ from their own.

This belief drives learning at Gordon every day, and the presidential election has offered several opportunities to take this message beyond the campus as well.

Last week, Gordon shared six tips for talking to children about the election, written by a Gordon seventh grade teacher with guidance for talking to children of all ages. These are online at www.gordonschool.org/sixtips

Gordon also shared two snapshots of lessons where voting and community activism were being taught alongside basic literacy and math skills. East Bay Newspapers picked up these vignettes and included them in a supplement this week.

Meanwhile, Abbey Buttacavoli of NBC10 WJAR visited campus to learn more and found third graders and seventh graders exploring debate in age-appropriate ways. That video is embedded above.

On October 1st, Gordon opens its doors to adults who are interested in this work. Democracy, Dissent and Decision Making will be an evening workshop led by Jason Craige Harris. This event is open to the public; details and RSVP at www.gordonschool.org/harris
