Gordon musicians selected for All State Festival

Gordon musicians continue to make music this year, despite the safety moratorium on singing in person. Zoom rehearsals after school allow students to connect with each other, pursue high-level musical achievement and nurture their lifelong attachment to artistic self-expression.

Six of these musicians (above) recently passed a rigorous audition process to earn invitations to the annual Rhode Island Music Educators All State Music festival. The festival is happening over video this year; these students were selected from among seventh, eighth and ninth graders representing eighty-four Rhode Island middle schools and high schools. After multiple Zoom rehearsals, they will be part of a video for the state's virtual mixed chorus, treble chorus, or orchestra.

In 2009, Kayla Campbell '11 chose to take a chance and audition for the All State Festival, making her the first Gordon student in anyone's memory to try out. In the eleven years since then, sixty-eight Gordon students have passed the auditions and invited to participate. This year, the final product will be a video, not a performance at Providence's Veteran's Memorial Auditorium: a little less glamorous than previous year's, but no less distinguished.

The high school level of this year's festival is also full of Gordon musicians:
Dylan Bean '18 - double bass, Senior Jazz Band
Ella Bogdahn '17 - soprano, Senior Mixed Chorus
Dimitri Daskalopoulos '18 - violin, Senior Orchestra - 1st chair!
Leenah Gibbs '19 - alto, Senior Treble Chorus
Audrey Lee '19 - alto, Senior Treble Chorus
Evelyn McAdam '17 - tuba, Senior Band
Emma Platt '18 - soprano, Senior Treble Chorus
Andrew Song '20 - bass, Junior Mixed Chorus and cello, Junior Orchestra
