Gordon musicians in the spotlight

Middle School students shine at All-State auditions, winter concert

above: Earlier this month, these eight seventh and eighth graders were invited to be part of the 2020 Rhode Island Music Educator's Junior All State Festival.

These eight seventh and eighth graders were among the over nine hundred seventh, eighth and ninth graders from throughout the state who auditioned in November.

The three eighth graders each earned second in the state in their vocal categories; Gordon students were tied for second place in the altos. A third student, who was second place in the bass category, was also accepted as a cellist, and will be in the All-State Orchestra.

The results of that program were on display last night at the Middle School winter concert. If the video don't appear, try these one two three links

Nine Gordon graduates also made it into the festival: Ella Bogdahn '17, Charlie Callahan '17, Dimitri Daskalopoulos '18, Leenah Gibbs '19, Kailas Kahler '16, Audrey Lee '19, Maddie Lee '16, Eric Song '16 and Henry Stanton '16.

Audrey Lee (Dorothy in last year's Wizards of Oz) was ranked first among altos in the Junior Treble Mixed Chorus, and Henry Stanton was ranked first among basses in the Senior Mixed Chorus.

Each student's audition consisted of performing required repertoire, sight-reading, tonal memory for singers, and scales and arpeggios for instrumentalists.

Participants will learn and practice four or five pieces of challenging music, attend rehearsals in February and two eight-hour days in March, and then perform at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence on Sunday, March 15th.

More from the concert, and today's rehearsal, are on Gordon's Instagram, along with this fifth grader who'll be performing solo in Plainville, MA on Sunday.
