Fresh words of wisdom

Second grade turns clichés on their head

Clichés are the enemy of creative writing, unless you’re a Gordon second grader.

For yesterday’s creative writing period, this class put their own spin on a variety of timeworn sayings.

Their teacher gave them a phrase like “No crying over…” and asked them to complete the thought, and illustrate it.

For some, they knew the “answer” - there is no crying over spilled milk, even for second graders - but some of the less familiar ones generated some new, original, words of wisdom:

When life gives you lemons… slice them.

You can’t teach an old dog… that’s a grump.

above: Too many cooks in… the kitchen and the stove catches on fire.

The best things in life are… the universe.

If you can’t beat them… don’t.

above: This is as easy as… pickles in your hair.

The early bird… rises at the sun.

No news is… like a horse!

above: You can lead a horse to water, but… you can’t lead a horse to the bottom of the earth.

above: This is as easy as… walking on smooth grass.

above: We’ll cross that bridge when… it falls down and we fall in the water.

A penny saved is… a cent.

When in Rome… I roam and I am a ghost!
