"Extraordinary originality and dedication"

Two friends of Gordon among the twenty-one 2020 MacArthur "Genius" Grant winners

Two friends of Gordon are among the twenty-one 2020 MacArthur "Genius" Grant winners: activist Catherine Flowers (above) and author Jacqueline Woodson.

Flowers met with Gordon eighth graders in 2016, in the Montgomery offices of the Equal Justice Initiative, talking about environmental racism and her work advocating for the citizens of Lowndes County, Alabama. More on that day

Author Jacqueline Woodson spent a day at Gordon in 2006, working with students just months before the school established the Karla Harry Visiting Author Program that continues to this day. More photos from that visit

The MacArthur fellowships are given annually to individuals who exhibit "extraordinary originality and dedication," and come with a $625,000, no-strings-attached award. More on this year's winners

Photos are of Catherine Flowers and Gordon eighth graders at the EJI in 2016, and Jacqueline Woodson in Gordon's Kindergarten shared space, 2006.
