Encountering Columbus through poetry, history and today's choices

Seventh graders have reviewed documents ranging from the diaries of Columbus's crew to recent editorials in Politico and CNN.

They parsed four different poems about Columbus as an exploration of tone and perspective.

They held a trial that implicated multiple parties in the genocide of the Tainos, the people Columbus first encountered when he arrived in America.

And yesterday, they read Dr Thomas López's recent letter on the Columbus holiday and began drafting letters to her with their own thoughts on how Gordon should recognize the holiday.
