Some recent victories in Gordon's sustainability efforts

 
Happy Earth Day!

Preschool adapted a favorite song in honor of the day. There are verses, too - ask a Preschool student!

Other recent sustainability victories include:
 
  • Buildings and Grounds has started the work of converting all of Gordon’s grass areas to an organic lawn care management plan.
     
  • A renewed drive for composting at lunch, which is diverting over 125 pounds of waste from the landfill every day, which will prevent over 11 tons of CO2 emissions every year.
     
  • Support for zero-waste events, with compostable serviceware, clearly labeled waste stations, and less single-use plastic.
     
  • The launch of a multi-year stream restoration project, aimed at improving water quality, reducing erosion along the banks, preventing water from running against the building and supporting native habitat and biodiversity.
     
  • The start of the 12 Acre Classroom, a multi-year initiative to support and expand teachers’ use of the outdoors in teaching and learning.

All of these efforts are affirmed and amplified by a schoolwide curriculum that engages students in sustainability work on many levels, from the simple joy of hatching praying mantises (and learning about how those insects support a healthy ecosystem) to organizing and executing a schoolwide clothing swap in sixth grade.
