Dr. Lynda Blackmon Lowery remembered

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of longtime activist and friend of Gordon Dr. Lynda Blackmon Lowery.

Dr. Lowery was the youngest person to complete the 1965 Voting Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, and spent much of her professional life changing lives as a mental health care worker.
 

She met with Gordon eighth graders during the 2023 and 2024 Civil Rights Trips. Before then, she had already become a well-known name for a generation of Gordon students, through her memoir Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom and through the stories that her sister, Joanne Bland, had been sharing with Gordon students since their first trip south in 2002.

Gordon’s Civil Rights Trip brings the school’s eighth grade to Georgia and Alabama to meet veterans of the civil rights movement, visit historical sites and memorials, and connect with activists working to make change in the present day. More on the trip at www.gordonschool.org/civilrights
