A thoughtful balance

Second grade got into the work of stewarding Gordon’s outdoor spaces recently when they spoke up about their concern about the salt used to melt snow and ice.

Their teacher helped them articulate their concerns and research some of the science. Then Buildings and Grounds Director Eddy Dalo came by for an extensive question and answer session, where they learned about the chemistry of melting ice, the difference between magnesium chloride and rock salt, and the work of balancing human safety and wildlife safety.

The conversation was one data point in a constellation of lessons happening around sustainability and Gordon’s campus, from Early Childhood to eighth grade.
