Bringing the conversation to parents and caregivers

In-person, in Zoom and through video, in small groups, in schoolwide discussions, and at public events

Thanks to the Middle School parents and caregivers who came to Friday’s roundtables on community expectations and learned about the ways the post-COVID Middle School team is re-introducing the social and emotional skills that are important for community building. Great conversation was generated in both the in-person and the Zoom sessions.

Those were the first of a series of talks being shared this month: next up, this evening, parents and caregivers just got a video update on Gordon’s strategic plan in their inboxes, from Head of School Noni Thomas López.

Then, on Wednesday, Dr. Thomas López and Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning Alethea Dunham-Carson will present “Sustaining a school community rooted in justice and love,” a workshop for parents and caregivers of current students. They’ll explore Gordon’s current efforts to provide a strong and inclusive environment for all students, drawing on the results of last year’s Study on Belonging. RSVPs and child care registration is at www.gordonschool.org/belonging

To finish up a busy October, Gordon will invite the public to come together for a talk on “Sustainability education: sharing a voice in our children’s future." On the eve of the symposium hosted at Gordon, Peter Milne of Beyond COP21 will talk about engaging young people in the fight against climate change. Milne has been at the forefront of education efforts across the globe with dozens of distinguished partners in the nonprofit and academic sectors, and developed the symposium that will bring students from local public and independent schools to Gordon the following day. Details and RSVP for this public event are at www.gordonschool.org/cop21

In-person, in Zoom and through video, in small groups, in schoolwide discussions, and at public events, Gordon’s offering families multiple ways to engage with the work of the school - and parents and caregivers are responding.
