Baking bread, breaking bread

Nursery participates in a age-old tradition

Gordon students love to cook, and the work begins in the first days of their first year here.

Nursery baked their first birthday bread today.

Everyone got to help.

The recipe is simple: milk, sugar, yeast, flour and salt.

Five ingredients, in simple proportions, kneaded and mixed in a deliberate sequence of steps.

It’s teamwork, it’s sharing, it’s math and it’s project management.

And literacy. You get one guess: what is the first initial of today’s birthday honoree?

They gathered outside and broke bread together.

First they sang the traditional birthday song.

Then they heard a special Gordon Nursery birthday song.

They’ll learn that song by heart soon enough...

...as they learn the recipe

and learn to add a little flour when the dough gets sticky

and learn the first initial of each other’s first names

and learn which parts of baking they enjoy

and learn to wait their turn when the bread is shared

and learn to enjoy a basic ritual that humans have been sharing for thousands of years.

Gordon's Early Childhood program is supported by the Gordon Fund.
