The Gordon School

Awards season is here

With the end of the school year, academic awards and athletics championships accumulate for Gordon graduates.

Below are a few of the honors and distinctions that have come to Gordon’s attention in the past weeks.

If you have more news about alumni, please send them along to alumni@gordonschool.org

Meredith Langmuir ’15 (above left) and Kari Buonanno ’15 (above right) returned to Gordon in March 2016 to serve as referees at the Middle School Gator Madness round robin tournament

Former Gordon teammates Kari Buonanno ’15 and Meredith Langmuir ’15 grabbed headlines as the lead scorers in the Division I Girls Lacrosse tournament. The pair of juniors, already committed to Division I colleges, were key contributors to a legendary set of Gordon championship teams a few years back.

Meanwhile, at Providence Country Day, Maggie Rock ’14 was the captain of three varsity sports - basketball, lacrosse and soccer - and was named to the NEPSAC Basketball All-Star team.

Kailas Kahler ’16 won the singles championship at the New England Prep School Invitational Tennis Tournament, a huge accomplishment for a high school sophomore. His success is a nice compliment to recent news about Gordon’s tennis team.

Jared Donaldson ’11 continues to attract international attention on the professional tennis circuit, most recently at the French Open where he successfully tried a rare underhand serve in an epic five-set match against Grigor Dimitrov.

Ali Blanchard ’14 was selected as the 2017-18 Gatorade Rhode Island Softball Player of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.

Mica Lin-Alves ’14 was elected by his classmates to be one of two speakers at this year’s Commencement at the Putney School in Vermont.

Taissa Hayda ’14 was a finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Ellie Miller ’14 earned the Army Armstrong Math Award, and Jack Stone ’15 was given the General Treasurer’s Young Leader Award, at the Wheeler School this spring.

Sara Remmler ’14, above, with the book she was given as part of the Providence Country Day School’s award for excellence in history. A new generation of Gordon students got to enjoy Sara’s excellence when she volunteered in the Young Kindergarten class as part of the senior project this spring.

Sara Remmler ’14 took Providence Country Day’s key senior award, the Class of 1929 Gold Medal For Excellence, given "for excellence in scholarship, participation in athletics, participation in other extracurricular activities, leadership in and influence upon the school, and faithfulness of effort." She also received the Charles S. Gwynne Award for athletics, and awards for excellence in Spanish and history.

Gideon Parker ’15, Ellie Hamilton ’15 and Ellie Miller ’14 were inducted into the Cum Laude International Honor Society. The Wheeler School participates on the society to honor the top scholars in the junior and senior classes. The criteria include grades, level of difficulty of courses and integrity.

Gideon was also awarded one of five Junior Classroom Awards, honoring positive contributions to classes: being a positive role model for peers in classes, being invested in learning and scholarship, demonstrating intellectual curiosity and breadth of knowledge, and attaining significant academic achievement.

Eric Song ’16 and Gianna Paratore ’17 were both honored with math department awards at Moses Brown’s year-end awards ceremony in May. Each year, each academic department singles out students from each grade for excellence; Gianna won the freshman math award and Eric won a sophomore award. Eric and Gianna were both cornerstones of Gordon’s MathCounts teams as Gordon began an impressive run of successes that continued this year with first place finishes in both the individual and team rankings at the states.
