A running start

Eighth graders prepare for life after Gordon

Eighth graders began four weeks of work at local nonprofits and community groups yesterday.

It’s the start of an annual service learning project that gives eighth graders a running start as they prepare to leave Gordon and head out to change the world.

They spend four weeks working mornings at sites, then spend the afternoon at Gordon researching the larger context for the work they are doing: the community needs that their organizations address, and the systemic challenges the organizations face.

The service learning project is a key part of Gordon’s mission of producing graduates who have the tools, and the drive, to create positive change in their communities. These four weeks spent out in the community are a final exam of sorts as students test what Gordon has taught them about listening, organizing, and working hard to help make a better world.

They will present their research and reflect on their experiences at the CJ Buckley Experiential Learning Night, June 5th at 6:30. More on that event at www.gordonschool.org/cjbuckleyrsvp
