The Gordon School

A leadership challenge

Lessons in a daily tradition

Fourth graders were initiated into a Gordon leadership tradition today as they practiced raising the flag and ringing the bell in the bell tower.

After they get the hang of these tasks, they’ll take over responsibility for making sure the flag is raised and the bell is rung every morning.

Their teachers will make a rotating calendar to be sure that everyone gets a chance, but otherwise it’s up to the students to be sure the job is done.

That includes getting to school on time and executing the basics, but also problem-solving when the ropes get tangled, the bell hook is misplaced, and the flag goes up upside-down.

All of these hiccups (and more) will literally happen in front of the whole school, as faculty and students stream into the building, and the fourth graders will be able to practice poise and resourcefulness, both essential habits of good leaders.
