Newsflash!
4 Roterman's science class is featured in the first 'What Matters' video! Click the link below and see what the students get up to during Mrs Ketner's wonderful classes!

One of the first activities we did in the new year was making bar graphs showing where Cape-Verdean immigrants settled in New England in the early 1900's. We learned it was very important to make sure that the numbers on the vertical axis occurred at regular intervals, no matter how much paper it took.....

...we were also very excited to have storyteller Len Cabral come in and tell us about his Cape-Verdean ancestors coming to Rhode Island.

We started to work on fractions and set about dividing a geo-board into halves. We learned that each half did not have to be that same shape, as long as it had the same amount of squares as the other half...

..the same goes for quarters, and eighths...

In continuation of our unit on measurement, we have been......

....converting inches, feet and yards using trading games.....

......estimating the height of the flagpole in feet and inches.....and finding out the actual height!

...measuring various surfaces to the nearest quarter inch.....

While reading a biography on Jackie Robinson, we learned that in college, he performed a record breaking broad jump of 26 feet! We measured our own broad jumps and compared them to his.....

We got to see a real baseball diamond at McCoy stadium.....

...and then measured our own baseball diamond at school....

...we got to play on it for a bit and realized that 90 feet between bases and 60 feet to pitch is actually quite far!

Afterwards, we used the dimensions of a baseball diamond to answer word problems and practice adding and subtracting measurements.

This week, we have been...

...making our own rulers as a start to our unit on measurement..

.... playing games to practice our math facts......

..ending with a visit to Eastgate Nursing Home to see our 'Elderbuddies'....

The students have received the eagerly awaited Battle of the Books list! Please click the link below to view it (and print out a copy if need be).

After your child reads each book, they will have to fill out a log for it. There are plenty of spare logs in the classroom, but should you need one, please click the link below for a copy. You can print it out, and your child can complete it.

If your child finds it easier to type up their log, then you can use this special B.O.B log template (the link below is a word document)

..meeting and spending time with our new first grade buddies.....

..and reviewing the important difference between 'place value' and 'face value' by playing some math games!
