Eighth grade forms, secondary school process |
Thursday, January 19th |
Dear Eighth Grade Families, If you can not attend the meeting, I will send home any information that was handed out. SSP reminder: If you haven't sent your child's SSAT scores to the secondary schools yet, please do so as soon as possible. On your child's admission ticket, it will say where the scores were sent. At the time of registration, I could only send the scores to Gordon and one other school. If you need me to walk you through the ssat website ( www.ssat.org), I would be happy to do so. If you are getting emails or post cards that say your child's transcripts have not been received, please do not worry. They absolutely will be delivered before the due date. Keep in mind the volume of applications the schools receive; sometimes they fall behind in the data entry. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Kim |

To all Middle School families |
Monday, October 24th |
As you may remember from my August letter, Danny Karpf and Lisa Jacobson are expecting a baby soon. Once the baby is born, Danny will be out on leave until December 13th. While Danny is away, Kim Ridley will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Middle School. Kim’s role in the school has her regularly involved with Middle School faculty, students and parents and so a smooth transition will be easy to effectuate. Of course, Danny and Kim have been in touch now so that the “reins” can be passed effectively. Kim and I have also assessed how best to sustain the multi-faceted work she is responsible for in her role as Director of Diversity and Multicultural Practice. Through our combined efforts, we are confident that vital projects with faculty, volunteers, and trustees will move forward while she also maintains connections with students and parents from all three divisions. Gordon is indeed fortunate to have Kim’s many talents and abilities in the school. For now, let’s share our excitement with the Karpf-Jacobson family as they prepare for the arrival of a new member of their family! As always, be in touch if you have any questions. Sincerely, Ralph |

Dear Families, On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the seventh grade will visit Colt State Park in Bristol, RI with Save the Bay. As part of their unit on ecology, students will explore the different ecosystems that make up coastal Narragansett Bay. They will particularly focus on the role and importance of salt marshes. They will investigate threats to these ecosystems as well as ways to protect them and the human communities tied to them. Students will leave Gordon at 9:30 and return by 1:30. They will need to bring a snack, lunch and clothes that are appropriate for the weather that day. Sweaters and wind/rain coats, sunscreen and hats are especially helpful. Generally only extreme weather will cancel the trip. If your child has rubber boots, he/she should bring them. If you have questions, please call Blinn Dorsey or Sean Hamer. Thank you. We look forward to an exciting day! Blinn Dorsey and Sean Hamer |

Seventh grade to John Brown House Museum |

Tuesday, October 18th |

Wednesday, October 19, from 9:30-12:30.
This trip connects to the seventh grade's study of the transatlantic slave trade with a special focus on the often-forgotten history of slavery in New England. The trip will involve an activity revealing the widespread "web of complicity" as well as a look at the ill-fated voyage of the slave ship Sally in 1764-1765 and the debates between John Brown and his brother Moses, who became an ardent abolitionist. Students will also tour the house, which President John Quincy Adams referred to as "the most magnificent and elegant private mansion that I have ever seen on this continent." Students should bring a snack |
