Day three: the 2012 Civil Rights Trip
An hour-by-hour play-by-play

Throughout the trip south, eighth graders fill journals with observations and reflections. These are the raw material for scrapbooks and spoken presentations that they work on for the rest of the month.

Below is a different kind of writing: an eighth grader's hour-by-hour account of the first day. If the students' journals were blogs, then these would be one student's "tweets":

Day #3
Thursday February 9

8:37am
Getting back on the bus after a good night's sleep!

8:58am
We arrive at Trenholm State Archives to learn about the bus boycott and meet with archivist Dr. Gwen Patton. She is such an inspiration!

10:35am
On the bus, we head for the Southern Poverty Law Center in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama.

11:04am
At the SPLC, we speak with a young lawyer from New York, Tomas Lopez, on Alabama’s controversial immigration law, and a hate crimes investigator by the name of Anthony Greggs.

1:00pm
We enter our names on the Wall of Tolerance, making a commitment to fight injustice and inequality in our own communities, forever.

1:17pm
We proceed to the Civil Rights Memorial where we have time to observe and reflect.

4:33pm
Back on the bus after my first attempt at roller skating, and laser tag for the first time!

8:30pm
Arriving for dinner at Pizzeria Venti in Atlanta. Gelato!

9:25pm
Back on the bus after a delicious meal where we shared great elementary school memories!

9:40pm
We arrive at our last hotel. The trip is coming to an end! So sad!

9:58pm
Options! Apples to Apples, working out with Mr. Kravitz and Ms. Reeves or swimming in the pool?

The cost of the trip is subsidized by the Bready-Lapides Eighth Grade Educational Trip Fund and the Class of 2003 Museum Admissions Fund.
