Writers in the family
Playwrights, memoirists, journalists and philanthropists.

On February 28th, Love Alone, the newest play by Gordon parent Deborah Salem Smith, will open at Trinity Rep. Smith recently discussed the play, which won an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award, on Rhode Island Public Radio's Artscape.

Smith's partner, psychiatrist Dr. Christine Montross, is a writer as well. Her acclaimed memoir, Body of Work: Meditations on Mortality from the Human Anatomy Lab, was published in 2007.

Smith will give a lecture and staged reading Wednesday, February 1st, at 5:30 in Brown University's Pembroke Hall. This presentation begins just minutes after the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr lecture by Claude Steele, which happens a few blocks away at Brown's Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. Gordon's faculty will be attending Steele's lecture; faculty and parents and parents read and discussed Steele's Whistling Vivaldi in 2011.

Yet more Gordon connections: fellow Gordon parent Charlotte Bruce Harvey profiled Dr. Montross in Brown Alumni Magazine when Body of Work was published. Meanwhile, Henry D. Sharpe, Jr, Gordon Class of 1934, is an ongoing supporter of the new play program that brought Love Alone to Trinity.
