The Middle School Students of Color Conference was created in recognition of the unique experiences, of students of color in predominantly white independent schools. This conference brings together fifth through eighth students of color in the kind of critical mass that provides for a majority experience, which is not the norm in most of our schools. The conference seeks to raise self-consciousness, build community, and cultivate leadership among students of color.
Morning Keynote Speaker: Laymon Hicks
Laymon A. Hicks is the author of A Treasure Chest of Motivation: 8 Jewels of Wisdom for a Young Adult’s Success,‘N Laymon’s Terms…Words of Wisdom/Inspiration to Guide You on Your Life’s Journey and co- author of Unleash the Passion for your Purpose, and Ignite Your Dreams: How to Build and Accelerate Your Life as a Top Notch Student.
Hicks believes in paving the way for others like he, so they too can use their gifts, talents, and abilities. As a result, he founded the Laymon A. Hicks Scholarship Fund, which funds an annual scholarship to a first generation student entering a two or four year college or university. Pursuing his mission has not come without obstacles. But his resilience, hope, confidence and determination are what keep Laymon A. Hicks focused on maximizing his potential and being the absolute best person he can be, a message he inspires his audiences with all over the world. After one of Laymon A. Hicks’ engaging talks, young people are sure to be strengthened to pursue their purpose with passion and power. Laymond Hicks has a Bachelors and a Masters Degree from Florida State University.
In addition to the keynote speaker, the conference will consist of a series of workshops on varying topics, lunch, and time with other students and faculty of color.
