Mark Melvin, an inmate in an Alabama prison, is suing for the right to read the book. Authorities at the prison have deemed the book, which chronicles the systematic abuse of black prisoners in the antebellum South, "a security threat."
Douglas Blackmon spoke at Gordon during the 2010 centennial celebrations, Gordon eighth graders visited the school he founded when they traveled Georgia in 2011, and his relationship with Gordon continues to grow.
