Preparing to learn an ancient technique
April visit from Japanese artist requires months of planning

Indigo is growing in the Creamer Science Lab.

Students are learning about the plant in advance of their work with shibori artist Hiroko Harada, who arrives in April as the fifteenth Britt Nelson Visiting Artist.

The students will not, of course, be creating art with the indigo now growing in the lab. In order to be properly prepared for use in April, Harada's indigo is already well into a year-long fermentation process. It must then travel from Japan by boat, a three month journey. The final steps in the processing will take place at Gordon, during the first week of Harada's residency, immediately before the third, fifth, seventh and eighth graders begin learning shibori.
