August 2011
Dear Middle School Families,
I’m writing to let you know about the enhanced structure of our math enrichment program, MathCounts, this year. I’m excited that Eric Kravitz, one of our eighth grade math and science teachers, will be leading the program in new ways this year. Allow me to elaborate:
Eric will develop weekly packets of challenging problems from the MathCounts database. These problems involve interesting, real-life problem solving using a rich array of math skills. Any student in Middle School may ask for this challenge packet through her or his math teacher on Mondays beginning in October. Eric will check the answers and return them to the student; each math teacher will determine how they will assign “credit” for this work.
On Fridays from 4:00pm-4:45pm from October through February, Eric will run MathCounts team sessions. Again, any Middle School student is welcome to join this team for these sessions. There will be no charge for this program, and YAP will be provided free of charge if you need childcare from 2:00pm-4:00pm. If your child is interested in joining the team, please contact Eric by emailing him at school (ekravitz@gordonschool.org). Please also let him know if your child will be staying for YAP so that he can let Aleida Benitez know to expect her or him.
As an August warm up for the team, Eric will run sessions on Monday, August 22, and Thursday, August 25, both from 12:30pm-2:15pm. Again, this is free of charge, and you should email Eric if your child is interested in either or both sessions.
Finally, as we have for years, Gordon will send a team to the Rhode Island state MathCounts competition, usually held in late February. This competition team is only open to sixth through eighth graders, and we can only send our top eight team members, who will be determined in the winter based on a school competition.
I’m thrilled to be able to offer this new level of challenge for all our Middle School mathematicians. Please encourage your child to consider this opportunity. Let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Danny Karpf
