Science at Gordon

The school’s science program emphasizes hands-on activities in learning. These activities aim to build skills of questioning, experimentation, research and documentation in developmentally appropriate ways. Concrete experiences are the basis for constructing more abstract science concepts.

Gordon’s facilities, both indoor and outdoor, provide rich opportunities for scientific exploration beginning with the youngest student. Early Childhood students learn about the natural world on the playground and gardens, in the classroom, and through regular visits to the Early Childhood Idea Lab.

In first and second grade, students continue their outdoor experiments, and visit the Lower School IDEA Lab to work with faculty specialists.

By third grade, students are visiting the Creamer Science Lab every week to engage in extended projects that may involve live animals and plants, handmade clocks and rockets, laptops and robots, and the ecosystems of the lab’s courtyard gardens.
